In 1954, Van Tarble purchased an existing quarry 3 miles east of Charleston, Illinois from Nate Lang. That quarry was the beginning of Charleston Stone Company. In the early 1960s another quarry just to the east, across the Embarrass River was purchased from Olen Humphres.

These two quarries were both operated as Charleston Stone. In 1999, the two plants were integrated into one operation 1/2 mile east of the river.

Today, Charleston Stone Company produces high-quality crushed aggregate for commercial and IDOT-approved projects. The quarry services our long-time asphalt and redi-mix partners, as well as projects throughout the area. A variety of material is available at Charleston Stone, including CA-6 Roadpack, CA-16 for asphalt and chip and seal applications, 3/4” and Ag Lime for agricultural needs.
